HotStuff consensus is an efficient BFT consensus protocol that was first proposed in 2018, offering a 2 to 3 times performance improvement over traditional pBFT consensus (such as Cosmos, Solana, Polygon, etc.) and demonstrating stronger adaptability to adverse network conditions. It has also been adopted by projects like Libra (Diem) and later derivatives such as Aptos and Sui. However, since the design goals of projects like Libra are centralized settlement networks, their implementation of HotStuff consensus is not suitable for decentralization and harsh network conditions, resulting in only a few permitted nodes being able to participate in the validation network.

The Meter mainnet is the first and only fully decentralized, permissionless mainnet based on HotStuff consensus, supporting the EVM ecosystem.
