ChainCatcher news, the official Twitter account of the X (Twitter) safety team @Safety stated that they have confirmed the official account of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) @SECGov was compromised. Preliminary investigations indicate that this breach was not due to a vulnerability in X's systems, but rather because an unverified individual gained control of the phone number associated with the @SECGov account through a third party.

Additionally, they confirmed that the account did not have two-factor authentication enabled at the time of the breach. Safety encourages all users to enable this additional layer of security.
