German police seized 50,000 bitcoins worth $2.17 billion in a case involving the operation of a piracy website

ChainCatcher news, according to CoinDesk, German police have temporarily seized 50,000 bitcoins, worth $2.17 billion. The case is related to the operation of a piracy website that violated copyright laws in 2013, with the proceeds subsequently converted into bitcoins.

The statement said that one of the two suspects voluntarily transferred the bitcoins to the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA). Although no formal charges have been made against these individuals, investigations into the subsequent money laundering activities are still ongoing. The police statement further added that a final decision regarding the use of the bitcoins has not yet been made.
