ChainCatcher news, the North Carolina legislature passed a bill on Wednesday that restricts the state government from using and accepting central bank digital currency (CBDC) issued by the Federal Reserve. House Bill 690 has now been submitted to Governor Roy Cooper for approval, after the Senate passed the bill with a vote of 39 in favor and 5 against the day before.

On June 26, the House passed the bill with a vote of 109 in favor and 4 against. If Cooper signs the bill into law, it will immediately prohibit state agencies and courts from accepting "payments using central bank digital currency." It will also prohibit them from participating in "any CBDC testing conducted by any Federal Reserve branch."
