Yonhap News: Lee Jae-myung spoke on the phone with Trump as early as today
ChainCatcher news, according to a report by Yonhap News Agency, sources in the South Korean diplomatic community revealed on the 4th that South Korea's elected president Lee Jae-myung may have a phone call with U.S. President Trump as early as that day.
The report states that the governments of South Korea and the United States are coordinating arrangements for a phone call between Lee Jae-myung and Trump later that afternoon. This call is expected to primarily consist of Trump congratulating Lee Jae-myung on his inauguration and both sides reaffirming their willingness to cooperate, but there may also be an exchange of views on unresolved issues such as North Korea's nuclear program and tariffs.
The two sides may also engage in principled discussions regarding the holding of a South Korea-U.S. summit. Diplomatic circles predict that, considering the usual practice of newly inaugurated South Korean presidents visiting the U.S. early on, the South Korea-U.S. summit is likely to take place between July and August in the United States. The two leaders may also have their first face-to-face meeting during the G7 summit held in Canada from the 15th to the 17th of this month, or at the NATO summit in The Hague, Netherlands, on the 24th to the 25th.
