U.S. Treasury Secretary: Trump will decide whether to extend trade negotiations

ChainCatcher news, according to a CNBC program report, U.S. Treasury Secretary Basant stated that Trump will decide whether to extend negotiations with trade partners beyond the July 9 deadline. Basant was asked on the program Thursday whether it was possible to extend the deadline, saying, "We will act according to the president's wishes, and it is up to him to decide whether they are negotiating in good faith."

Basant mentioned that he met with the EU trade representative on Thursday morning and stated that U.S. Trade Representative Greer would "work hard with European officials over the weekend." When asked about the negotiations with Japan, Basant indicated that no agreement had yet been reached with Japan, possibly due to domestic political issues complicating the negotiations.

Regarding Vietnam, Basant said his understanding is that an agreement has "principally been reached," and the 20% tariff announced by Trump is a core part of the agreement, which will not be added on top of the 10% general tariff. (Jinshi)
