Informed sources: The Trump administration plans to reform the way employment data is collected to avoid significant data revisions in the future
ChainCatcher news, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal citing informed sources, after the labor statistics chief was abruptly dismissed this month due to weak employment data, White House officials revealed that the Trump administration is considering changing the way federal employment data is collected and released.
Informed sources disclosed that in recent days, White House staff and Labor Department officials held a series of closed-door meetings to discuss proposals such as using new technologies to improve data collection efficiency. A White House assistant stated that increasing the response rate of Labor Department surveys is one of the goals of the reform. Officials said Trump has explicitly requested that significant data revisions be avoided in the future. White House Press Secretary Levitt stated on Tuesday that the president is reviewing the "statistical methods and processes" behind the employment data.
The report noted that if there are changes in the statistical methods for the non-farm payroll report released on the first Friday of each month, it could raise suspicions that Trump is manipulating data for political purposes. This president, who often questions data that does not align with his worldview, has recently intensified control over traditionally independent agencies and purged career bureaucrats deemed disloyal.
