Opinion: Quantum computing may break the Bitcoin algorithm within three years

2025-11-06 17:46:53

According to the Quantum Doomsday Clock, quantum computing may crack the Bitcoin encryption system on March 8, 2028. Research indicates that breaking ECC-256 requires only 1,673 logical qubits, while RSA-2048 requires 2,314.

IBM's Chief Technology Officer Michael Osborne stated that the growth rate of quantum risk is exceeding expectations, and IBM's Starling project plans to build a fault-tolerant quantum computer by 2029. Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko warned that blockchain networks must migrate to quantum-resistant encryption technology within 5 years.
