OpenAI CEO Altman will report to the United Nations Security Council

An OpenAI spokesperson stated that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman will personally brief the United Nations Security Council during the UN General Assembly next week in New York. The Security Council, composed of 15 member countries, is scheduled to hold a meeting on artificial intelligence and international security on Wednesday. The meeting is convened by France, which holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council in September, and will be chaired by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot.

Diplomatic sources indicate that the attendance of senior officials from Anthropic is also expected, but has not yet been confirmed. Altman's remarks are expected to focus on international coordination, shared security standards, and the measures OpenAI is taking to benefit people worldwide. The concept note prepared by France for the meeting mentions the risks of malicious misuse of artificial intelligence and the urgency of taking action to promote safe and responsible development. The Security Council held its first meeting on the risks of artificial intelligence in 2023.
