first_img Former NCA officials were sentenced to pay £1.81 million for stealing 50 bitcoins

According to Decrypt, the UK's Crown Prosecution Service obtained a confiscation order under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002, requiring 44-year-old Paul Chowles, a former officer of the National Crime Agency (NCA) from Bristol, to repay £1,810,678.93, approximately $2.4 million. This amount is related to the 50 bitcoins he stole, which were worth about £60,000, or approximately $77,000, when he took them in 2017. Of the 50 bitcoins, 30 have been recovered, and the Crown Prosecution Service attributes the difference between the two amounts to the appreciation of bitcoin since 2017.Chowles was involved in the NCA's investigation of the dark web market Silk Road 2, responsible for analyzing and extracting cryptocurrency from the devices involved. In May 2017, he transferred 50 bitcoins from Thomas White's reserve wallet over two days, splitting them into smaller amounts and transferring them through the bitcoin mixing service Bitcoin Fog, and cashed out a total of £144,580 through 279 transactions using Cryptopay and Wirex debit cards. For years, this theft was attributed to White, who has always denied it, and by the end of 2021, the missing bitcoins were listed as untraceable. In 2022, devices containing private keys were found during a search of Chowles' residence, and the Merseyside police, with the assistance of Chainalysis, traced the flow of funds.

first_img A memo from allies of Trump names Anthropic CEO, viewing him as a representative of the AI apocalypse theory

Axios reported that allies of Trump are attacking Dario Amodei, the CEO of the artificial intelligence company Anthropic, as a representative of the "doomsday" narrative surrounding artificial intelligence and one of the founders of the effective altruism movement. Sources say that during the midterm elections, allies may target Anthropic when countering his warnings about AI safety; due to his political stance and concerns about AI safety, he is seen as an easy target. This is concerning for investors as the company is preparing for an anticipated record-breaking initial public offering. The report states that a memo began circulating internally within the White House this week, attempting to portray effective altruism as a fringe, cult-like group detached from mainstream America, with Axios claiming to have obtained the document. The memo was written by a Trump political advisor not currently employed by the White House, stating that effective altruism "has established a doomsday pipeline for artificial intelligence," placing Amodei at the foundational position of the movement, while also mentioning his sister, Daniela Amodei, president of Anthropic, referring to these connections as "Anthropic nodes." A source close to the government said that Amodei embodies an ideology and globalist innovation path that contradicts the president's "America First" agenda.Anthropic has been distancing itself from effective altruism. Daniela Amodei stated in a 2025 Wired report that she does not agree with the term. Dario Amodei has insisted in interviews that he is not a member of the movement and has promoted the benefits of artificial intelligence.

Arthur Hayes: AI "Safety First" is essentially a destruction of computing power demand; the U.S. government's ultimate choice in all scenarios is to print money, which ultimately benefits Bitcoin

Arthur Hayes published a new long article titled "Safety First," with the core argument that the claims of "safety first" by Anthropic, OpenAI, and SpaceX, which lead to a slowdown in AGI development, are not out of concern for human welfare but rather due to economic realities. The market does not want AI; it wants AI at "Chinese prices," meaning it needs intelligence that is 100 times cheaper than what is currently available. Hayes points out that "safety first" essentially destroys the demand for computing power. If the spending on training new models decreases and laboratories shift towards efficiency optimization, customers will spend less on computing power. The three major AI laboratories do not generate any profits, and their demand for computing power supports over $10 trillion in investment-grade debt and hundreds of billions in low-quality debt, which rely on profitable tech companies like Nvidia, Broadcom, Google, and Microsoft for off-balance-sheet endorsements. The real backstop is the holders of insurance policies in the United States.Hayes cites an analysis by Nick Nameth that reveals a "self-insurance scam": private equity giants (such as Apollo, KKR, Brookfield, etc.) acquire insurance companies, stuffing AI data center debt and SaaS private credit impacted by AI into insurance assets, and then provide false endorsements with minimal capital through affiliated self-insurance reinsurance companies. Nameth estimates that the total amount of these false reinsurance assets reaches $1.54 trillion. Once the AI data center debt is downgraded by rating agencies due to insufficient demand for computing power, insurance companies will be forced to add capital, while the affiliated reinsurance companies will be unable to pay, leading to insolvency for the insurance companies. In most states in the U.S., the insurance protection limit is only $250,000 to $300,000, and existing insurance companies only pay into the protection fund afterward, which encourages all parties involved to maximize risk-taking. When AIG was bailed out in 2008, TARP funds ultimately flowed to Goldman Sachs and led to record bonuses, while the general public only received foreclosure notices; Hayes believes this scenario will repeat itself. For cryptocurrency investors, the conclusion is a win-win situation. If the U.S. government chooses to become the "last buyer of computing power," it will print money in the name of national security to fund unproductive economic goods, driving up financial speculation and Bitcoin prices; if the government chooses to bail out insolvent insurance companies, it will also need to print money to cover bad AI debts, increasing the money supply and pushing up Bitcoin. Hayes specifically points out that the Federal Reserve voted unanimously last week to raise interest rates by 25 basis points, and RMP bond purchases have stopped since August 14, but commercial banks have taken over to create over $100 billion in currency, and the interest rate hike allows banks to earn an additional $7.5 billion in excess reserve interest each year. This money will be used to expand loans and market speculation, and the net effect remains stimulative. The fluctuations in the cryptocurrency market, which saw a slight increase at the end of August, are about to end, the supply of dollars will continue to grow, and Bitcoin and some selected altcoins will rise. Hayes also described this situation as "incredibly wonderful," stating that the government will not allow the free market to stop building AI data centers, there will be an oversupply of spot computing power, the usage of AI agents will increase, and the surge in money printing will drive investors to chase cryptocurrency assets.

U.S. Department of Justice: California woman sentenced to prison for concealing $2.6 million in cryptocurrency crime proceeds

The U.S. Department of Justice announced that Iris Rabaya Au, a 37-year-old woman from Irvine, Orange County, California, was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for failing to report over $2.6 million in illegal income to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). She was also ordered to pay $1.484 million in restitution and had multiple luxury cars, high-performance vehicles, designer handbags, and three "Godfather" sculptures confiscated. Au is the ex-girlfriend of cryptocurrency scammer Adam Iza.Prosecutors stated that between 2020 and 2024, Iza fraudulently obtained Meta advertising accounts and credit lines, selling account access and earning millions of dollars in unreported income. At Iza's direction, Au set up shell companies and opened bank accounts, using the related funds to pay approximately $1 million to Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) officers and to purchase or lease luxury homes, cars, jewelry, and clothing. They also spent nearly $10 million on entertainment and purchased about $16 million in cryptocurrency for Iza. Between 2020 and 2023, Au transferred over $2.6 million into her personal bank accounts but did not accurately report it on her federal tax returns. She pleaded guilty to one count of false tax return in March 2025. Iza pleaded guilty in January 2025 to charges including conspiracy to infringe rights, wire fraud, and tax evasion, with a sentencing hearing scheduled for October 5. He was also sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for his involvement in an attempted Bitcoin robbery and kidnapping case in Connecticut in August 2024.

Data: Garrett Jin, representing the whale entity, once held 10 billion USD in BTC and has incurred significant losses multiple times over the past year

According to EmberCN monitoring, the whale entity represented by Garrett Jin accumulated approximately 100,800 BTC at an average price of about $7,242 from May to June 2018. The value of the holdings at the same time last year once exceeded $10 billion, and subsequent investment funds mainly came from selling BTC.Starting in August 2025, the entity gradually sold about 89,000 BTC and bought approximately 900,000 ETH, with an average cost of over $3,500 for ETH. The related ETH was subsequently transferred to Binance in the first half of 2026. In December 2025, the entity went long on ETH on Hyperliquid; in early February 2026, the price of ETH dropped from $3,000 to $1,800, resulting in a liquidation of 213,000 ETH long positions worth about $670 million, with a margin loss of approximately $230 million.During the same period, the entity was believed to have provided some funds to Trend Research. A leveraged long position of 651,500 ETH by Trend Research had a stop loss, resulting in a loss of about $734 million. The entity also extracted and purchased on-chain through Binance from February to June this year, accumulating approximately 289.6 million "Binance Life" tokens, valued at about $150 million, accounting for 28.9% of the total supply of the token. In March, when the entity exchanged 50.43 million aEthUSDT for aEthAAVE, it encountered extreme slippage, only exchanging for 327.2 AAVE, resulting in a loss of about $50.39 million. Since July, the entity has been shorting ZEC on Hyperliquid, currently facing an unrealized loss of about $34 million.
