American residents fall victim to phone scams by impersonating law enforcement officers, losing $6,000 in Bitcoin

ChainCatcher News: A resident of Keystone, Colorado, encountered a complex cryptocurrency scam last week, losing over $6,000 in Bitcoin after scammers impersonated law enforcement officers and threatened to arrest him for missing jury duty.

According to documents reviewed by Decrypt, there was also a $4,000 transfer in progress, but officers intervened before the transfer could be completed.

The Summit County Sheriff's Office revealed that the criminals had obtained sensitive personal information during the call. The office noted in the incident report: "The deputy sheriff would never call to inform anyone of an arrest warrant and then offer to clear the warrant in exchange for gift cards, wire transfers, or Bitcoin."
