The virtual currency exchange bithumb made an operational error while distributing rewards to 249 users, mistakenly inputting a total of 620,000 Korean won as 620,000 bitcoins, resulting in the erroneous distribution of bitcoins worth 600 trillion Korean won. Although the exchange has recovered 99.7% of the assets, there are still 125 bitcoins that have not been recovered, with a total value of about 13 billion Korean won.

It has been confirmed that more than 80 people have cashed out the erroneously credited bitcoins. Approximately 3 billion Korean won has been transferred to personal bank accounts, and about 10 billion Korean won has been used to purchase other cryptocurrencies. Bithumb is currently communicating with the relevant users to request the return of funds. For users affected by market fluctuations, bithumb plans to fully compensate for the selling price difference and additionally provide a 10% compensation, while waiving trading fees for one week. The South Korean financial regulatory authorities have announced that they will conduct inspections of the internal controls and asset verification systems of all exchanges.
