first_img Arrakis: On-chain dollar yield RWA buyers primarily use crypto-native funds

On-chain liquidity protocol Arrakis Finance released a study tracking the on-chain buying records of 10 tokenized dollar yield products, using Ethena's sUSDe as a benchmark. The study covered 71,697 buyers with a total buying amount of 91.3 billion dollars. Of the 12.4 billion dollars in categorized demand, about two-thirds came from protocols and DAO treasuries, while the remainder came from individuals, exchanges, market makers, and crypto funds, with no purchases clearly traceable to traditional financial institutions such as pensions, asset management firms, or banks.Wallets with single purchases of 1 million dollars or more accounted for about 4% of buyers but held approximately 93% of the funds; among them, 2,586 buyers contributed over 90% of the nominal purchase amount. The median purchase amount for institutional buyers of Centrifuge's JAAA was about 29.1 million dollars, nearly three times that of the next product. About 80%, totaling 17.4 billion dollars, was settled in USDC, while USDT accounted for about 4.4 billion dollars, almost all of which was used for syrupUSDT. Primary subscriptions were the main pathway, with secondary market purchases accounting for less than 6%, and only sUSDe had 55% obtained through decentralized exchanges. The median first activity time for buyer wallets concentrated around mid-2024, described as new entrants of crypto-native funds. By time zone, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa accounted for 42%, Asia-Pacific for 40%, and the Americas for 18%. After tracing back two hops for 5.17 billion dollars of unmarked institutional-level funds, exchange sources accounted for 40% (Binance 1.12 billion dollars, Coinbase 970 million dollars), DeFi native funds accounted for 38%, and another 22% could not be identified.

first_img U.S. SEC Chairman: Plans to Establish a Framework for Cryptocurrency Asset Custody

The Chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Paul Atkins, issued a statement saying that the Commission proposed a plan this week to fill the regulatory gap regarding the custody of cryptocurrency assets by investment advisors and funds, providing a clear custody framework and compliance path for an asset class with increasing client demand.Atkins stated that the existing custody rules under the Investment Advisers Act of 1940 and the Investment Company Act of 1940 were established before the advent of the internet, primarily targeting traditional assets and requiring the use of approved custodians. The custody capabilities for new cryptocurrency assets often lag behind the launch of the assets by several months. This proposal aims to address this issue while updating the custody rules for advisors and regulated funds that have not been revised for decades to align with current industry practices and feedback. The statement noted that this proposal is part of the SEC's regulatory framework for cryptocurrency assets. Related efforts include stopping the replacement of regulation with enforcement, issuing a no-action letter regarding the pilot program for the tokenization of securities by custodial trust companies by December 2025, publishing a classification description for tokenized securities in January 2026, and subsequent initiatives regarding the securities attributes of cryptocurrency assets, broker registration, Regulation Crypto Assets, and innovative exemptions for trading tokenized NMS stocks. Atkins indicated that more regulatory proposals will be forthcoming.

first_img Celsius v. Chainalysis most charges dismissed, one incitement charge allowed to proceed

According to Cointelegraph, a U.S. federal judge dismissed most of the claims made by the Celsius litigation administrator against the blockchain analytics company Chainalysis, but allowed one to proceed.U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett of the Southern District of New York ruled on Tuesday, rejecting Chainalysis's request to dismiss the incitement charge, determining that the complaint sufficiently alleges that Chainalysis was aware that a press release issued by Celsius in 2020 contained false statements and assisted in disseminating that information. The court simultaneously dismissed 12 other claims with prejudice, prohibiting the plaintiffs from amending in this case; another 3 consumer protection claims were dismissed without prejudice, requiring the plaintiffs to amend or notify the court by October 20.The lawsuit was initiated by the Blockchain Recovery Investment Consortium (BRIC), which acts as the litigation administrator and claims manager for Celsius's bankruptcy estate, representing Celsius and some former clients in asserting rights. Chainalysis declined to comment to Cointelegraph. The core of the case revolves around a $3.3 billion "audit." In 2020, Celsius used Chainalysis's Reactor software to calculate its managed asset size and publicly announced the results as an audit.According to the complaint outlined by the court, a Celsius executive initially calculated approximately $1.18 billion in assets using Reactor, which later increased to about $3.3 billion due to adjustments in methodology.
