first_img Chainalysis: Singapore's crypto economy grew by 55.4%, reaching a scale of 284 billion USD

According to Cointelegraph, data from Chainalysis shows that in the year leading up to June 2026, Singapore's cryptocurrency economic activity grew by 55.4% year-on-year, reaching a scale of $284 billion, reclaiming its position as the largest crypto economy in Central Asia, Southeast Asia, and Oceania amid an overall contraction in the region. The increase was mainly contributed by institutional platforms, with such activities surging by 94% to $60 billion, concentrated among a few market makers, over-the-counter trading firms, and institutional brokers. During the same period, the total crypto economy in the aforementioned region declined by 6.8%.Chainalysis pointed out that the growth of Singapore's institutional ecosystem is highly concentrated, primarily reflected in large transactions on existing platforms rather than the entry of numerous new services. At the same time, Singapore is tightening cryptocurrency regulations while promoting tokenization, stablecoins, and digital asset settlements. In 2025, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) required local crypto companies providing services to overseas clients to obtain licenses or exit the market. StraitsX CEO Tianwei Liu believes this measure curbed speculative activities and increased the proportion of banks and large enterprises applying blockchain in production. MAS is also conducting compliance stablecoin and tokenized bank deposit pilots through the BLOOM program, with Ripple joining on March 25 to test cross-border trade settlements using RLUSD.The Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam excel in small P2P transfers. Chainalysis statistics show that the three countries collectively recorded 5.4 million domestic and international peer-to-peer transfers under $10,000, accounting for 14.4% of global similar transactions, but only representing 2.5% of the global crypto economy.

The mastermind behind the armed robbery of a cryptocurrency practitioner in Singapore was sentenced to 12 years and 11 months in prison and received 24 lashes

According to the United Morning News, seven Malaysian gangsters targeted players attending a poker game, breaking into a luxury private residence in Bukit Timah late at night, armed and stealing over 4.9 million dollars, quickly splitting into two groups to escape Singapore. Six of them pleaded guilty in the High Court on Monday (September 14), with the two masterminds sentenced to 12 years and 11 months in prison, 24 strokes of the cane, plus a fine of 4,000 dollars. In court, it was revealed that the masterminds, Wu Wentong (30 years old) and Huang Zhishan (35 years old), learned from a friend who had previously attended the poker game that the house often held poker games at night. After scouting the location, they discovered that the front door of the house would not be locked during the game. Wu Wentong and Huang Zhishan then recruited five other accomplices, specifically coming to Singapore to commit the crime. This armed robbery occurred around 2 a.m. on April 18, 2024, at a residence in the upscale Alper Wang Garden area, where 11 men and women were playing poker in the living room.According to the case details, around March 2024, Wu Wentong and Huang Zhishan decided to rob the poker players at the house due to financial issues. They knew that they could not carry out such a large-scale robbery with just the two of them, so they contacted Hamidun, who runs a private security company and provides debt collection services, to help gather a team, promising a reward of 1.5 million ringgit (approximately 470,000 Singapore dollars). After the group succeeded, they left in a multi-purpose vehicle, splitting into two groups to leave Singapore via the Tuas and Woodlands checkpoints. At the same time, several players in the private residence managed to free themselves from their restraints and reported the robbery to the police. With the assistance of the Royal Malaysia Police, the six defendants were arrested between late April and November 2024 and were extradited to Singapore for prosecution. The police have since recovered virtual currency worth 1.69 million dollars, while the remaining funds and property are still missing.

The Singapore Exchange (SGX) has received authorization from the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) under the Regulation 48.1 framework to open its Bitcoin and Ethereum perpetual contracts to U.S. institutional investors. KC Lam, Head of Crypto Derivatives at SGX Group, stated that previously U.S. participants were unable to trade these contracts, but they are now permitted direct access to its trading system.Since its launch at the end of November 2025, SGX's crypto perpetual contracts have accumulated a trading volume of $5.8 billion (approximately 400,000 lots), with an average daily trading volume of 1,300 lots ($19 million) as of August. Bitcoin accounts for 66% of open contracts and 83% of average daily trading volume, with a single-day peak trading volume of 11,500 lots (notional value of $145 million). Lam indicated that as the FIS backend integration is fully ready, they will assist U.S. clearing members in onboarding clients in the next month or two.Unlike crypto-native platforms, SGX's perpetual contracts have no expiration date but employ a margin call and collateral top-up mechanism instead of automatic liquidation, separating trading and clearing based on traditional futures market infrastructure. Stablecoins are not accepted as collateral, and the contract benchmark index is jointly developed by SGX and CoinDesk Indices. SGX's next step is to launch Bitcoin and Ethereum futures and options.
