Difficult to Distinguish Between True and False: Preventing Fraud Traps of Counterfeit Hotcoin
Recently, Hotcoin has received feedback from community users regarding the emergence of counterfeit Hotcoin websites and imitation apps that mislead users into downloading and installing them. These malicious entities guide users to register and deposit funds, using high rebate offers to entice users to send their deposit addresses. They then intercept or alter users' exchange deposit addresses through implanted Trojan viruses, resulting in asset losses for users.
Hotcoin hereby reminds all users to enhance their fraud awareness, recognize official channels, and be vigilant against scams!
What is a counterfeit app?
Fake apps have a similar appearance to the legitimate Hotcoin official app and other legal apps that you see in official stores. The purpose of these scammers creating such fake software is to deceive users into thinking that it is the real app and to download it. These scammers essentially aim to exploit users' trust in the issuing or service organization of the genuine app, luring users to install malicious software on their devices. For cryptocurrency or financial service apps, installing such software on personal devices poses serious risks to users' assets.

From logos to names, fake apps look almost identical to the real ones.

However, from the homepage and other user interfaces, they differ greatly from the Hotcoin official app. The counterfeit app appears just like a real mobile application. On the surface, they may have the same interface, services, and functions.
But upon closer inspection, you will find that the malware is secretly monitoring your phone activities or attempting to steal your personal information and assets. Scammers spread fake apps through various means, including common communication software, third-party or counterfeit app stores, as well as emails or text messages.
Fake applications in the cryptocurrency field often replace the addresses displayed on their deposit and withdrawal pages. When users initiate transfers, their assets ultimately end up in the scammers' accounts. This is one of the most common ways cryptocurrency users lose assets due to fake applications.
Dangers of counterfeit apps
Exercising fraud
Fake apps lure users into transferring funds or making large deposits with offers like "high rebates" and "multi-layered earnings," and promote these schemes. When users want to withdraw, they will be blocked from doing so under various pretexts.
Data theft
Some counterfeit apps are created by debugging the original code of the legitimate Hotcoin app. These modified apps can quietly send personal passwords and detailed login information to others without your knowledge. They can send various personal data: text messages, calls, your contact list, images, search history, location data, cryptocurrency wallet addresses, and even mnemonic phrases. Once attackers obtain the user's credentials and/or mnemonic phrases, they can easily steal the user's funds. Additionally, criminals can share the victim's personal information with other scammers, who may target the victim for further attacks.
Asset loss
Scammers exploit the fact that cryptocurrency wallet addresses are hard to remember. The most common scam method is that fake apps can generate cryptocurrency wallet addresses that are similar to real wallet addresses, leading to asset loss for cryptocurrency users. Scammers can then replace the real addresses displayed on the user interface's deposit and withdrawal pages. Unless users compare each character, there is almost no difference in appearance between the real wallet address and the counterfeit wallet address.
Address modification
Another common scam method is that when users copy and paste deposit or withdrawal addresses, the fake app manipulates the user's clipboard. In this case, when users paste the address for a transfer, they are pasting the scammer's forged wallet address, and ultimately, the user's funds will end up in the scammer's pocket.
In addition to the clipboard, scammers can also replace the QR code encoding the withdrawal address.
Fraud prevention tips
Trojan apps may jeopardize your financial security! When you perform fund transfer operations such as deposits and withdrawals, please carefully verify the deposit and withdrawal addresses, and confirm that the addresses shown in email verification match, as well as the transfer amounts, login information, etc., to avoid losses.
