first_img French semiconductor company Sequans liquidated 314 bitcoins, exiting its bitcoin reserve strategy

French semiconductor company Sequans Communications has sold its last 314 bitcoins, completing its exit from the bitcoin reserve strategy, having previously held over 3,200 BTC. Sequans stated that this exit was conducted after the redemption of convertible bonds completed in May, allowing it to refocus on its core cellular IoT and software-defined radio business.Sequans CEO Georges Karam stated that the company used the proceeds from the bitcoin sales to pay off convertible bonds and strengthen its balance sheet. Currently, Sequans holds no cryptocurrency and has no outstanding debts other than government-funded R&D obligations. Sequans launched its bitcoin reserve strategy in June 2025, announcing a $384 million equity security and convertible secured bond issuance, with Karam at the time calling bitcoin a primary asset and an attractive long-term investment. The company began to reduce its holdings less than six months later, selling 970 BTC in November to redeem half of the convertible bonds. By May 2026, Sequans indicated that it would no longer pursue the reserve strategy and would gradually liquidate the remaining bitcoins. During the 2026 crypto bear market, an increasing number of digital asset reserve companies abandoned or scaled back their accumulation strategies. VanEck's head of digital asset research, Matthew Sigel, noted at the end of July that at least nine companies had completely liquidated or abandoned their bitcoin and cryptocurrency reserve strategies in 2026.

first_img VanEck rated the executive compensation of Metaplanet as "poor," with dilution risks far exceeding those of peers

On Friday, asset management company VanEck released a report on the compensation of executives at the top ten digital asset treasury companies, rating the compensation structure of the Japanese Bitcoin treasury company Metaplanet as "poor," making it the only company to fall into the lowest rating. The report shows that Metaplanet's equity plan corresponds to 14.7% of fully diluted shares, with executive risk exposure at 8.2%, which is ten times the average level of 0.8% for the other nine companies, and the scale of the equity plan is also nearly four times the industry average. In comparison, the largest corporate Bitcoin holder, Strategy, has an equity plan that accounts for only 2% of fully diluted shares, with executive risk exposure at 0.5%, and its compensation structure rated as "good." Metaplanet currently ranks third among publicly listed companies in Bitcoin holdings with 43,000 BTC. VanEck pointed out that the gap partly stems from Metaplanet's previous compensation mechanism: the option pool automatically expanded when the company issued shares to purchase Bitcoin, causing it to swell from 46 million shares to 319.5 million shares, adding approximately 273 million potential shares, which drew criticism from shareholders at the time.Metaplanet terminated the automatic adjustment mechanism at the end of August and reduced the option pool by 41% to 188.2 million shares in September, but VanEck believes these adjustments are still "far from satisfactory," calling for the retraction of the expansion of approximately 273 million shares in favor of a shareholder-approved compensation plan, while also suggesting that executive compensation be linked to the number of Bitcoins corresponding to each fully diluted share and adopting a written grant timing policy.

first_img VanEck Research Director: The Bitcoin community has acknowledged the risks of quantum computing

According to Bitcoin Magazine, Matthew Sigel, the head of digital asset research at asset management company VanEck, stated in an interview with CNBC that quantum computing poses a risk to Bitcoin, but the community has recognized the seriousness of the issue. He pointed out that due to the decentralized nature of the crypto network, progress in addressing this issue may be slow, but the community is advancing related work.Sigel said, "This is a risk, but the community has already recognized the scope of the problem, and a large number of talents have gathered and proposed a framework for upgrading the system." He added, "Upgrades will not happen quickly because no CEO can tell developers 'do it now.' The governance process takes more time, and the process is more complex, but there are technical paths to achieve quantum resistance, and you will see more related progress in the coming years."Currently, quantum computers still have error rate issues and cannot crack Bitcoin's encryption algorithms. Some Bitcoin developers have begun testing quantum-resistant signatures on real-time sidechains. Coinbase plans to build a post-quantum signature pipeline using secure enclaves and threshold cryptography, and the Bitcoin Security Alliance, composed of BlackRock, Fidelity Digital Assets, Block, and others, is also supporting proposals like BIP-360 to reduce long-term quantum computing risks.

first_img VanEck Research Director: Bitcoin Can Perform Well Under Democratic Governance

Matthew Sigel, the Head of Digital Asset Research at the asset management company VanEck, stated on CNBC that Bitcoin does not need a Republican president to perform well, and former President Biden is not anti-Bitcoin. Sigel pointed out that despite Republicans repeatedly criticizing Democrats for being anti-cryptocurrency, and the regulatory agencies under the Biden administration suing digital asset companies, Bitcoin can still develop healthily under Democratic governance.Sigel also discussed the delay in the legislation of the Clarity Act, which aims to establish a classification framework for digital assets and clarify the regulatory jurisdiction over securities, commodities, or payment stablecoins. Some Republican senators accused Democrats of delaying the legislation, while Coinbase's Chief Policy Officer Faryar Shirzad believes that the opposition mainly comes from older Democrats, and the younger generation better understands technological changes, making cryptocurrency potentially the most bipartisan issue in Washington.Recently, Bitcoin has shown strong price performance, rising nearly 24% in the past seven days, reaching as high as $81,160, and currently retreating to about $78,438. Previously, the Trump administration promoted the establishment of a Bitcoin strategic reserve and issued several executive orders supporting cryptocurrency.

VanEck: Bitcoin has triggered 8 surrender indicators, and the real buying advantage may need to wait for a one-year cycle

According to CoinDesk, the latest report from asset management company VanEck shows that Bitcoin has currently triggered 8 out of 12 market capitulation indicators, indicating that the market is approaching the historical bear market bottom area, but the related signals do not mean that the price has bottomed out. These indicators mainly measure the market status of Bitcoin during extreme sell-off phases, including the extent of price retracement from highs, miner profitability, and the proportion of holders at a loss. Over the past three months, all 12 indicators have reached the triggering range.VanEck pointed out that Bitcoin's previous rounds of major bottoms experienced maximum declines of approximately 94%, 85%, 84%, and 78%, during which the market lacked support from spot ETF funds, institutional holdings were relatively small, and there were impacts from major industry events such as Celsius and FTX. In contrast, the market structure has changed this time. From a cyclical perspective, VanEck has compiled 4 complete Bitcoin cycles since 2011 and found that bear markets typically last about 11 months on average from peak to trough; if excluding the special cycle of 2011, the average is about 12.7 months. Currently, Bitcoin has entered the 10th month since its peak in October 2025, and the next potential accumulation window may appear between September and November of this year.VanEck concluded that the current capitulation indicators are more suitable as tools for long-term investors to assess the cycle position rather than short-term bottom-fishing signals. Historical data shows that the advantages of investing based on these indicators are mainly reflected within a one-year cycle, and the market may continue to fluctuate in the coming months.
