Gray Research Director: Ethereum is like a "small country," and the issuance of ETH determines the balance between network security and currency

Zach Pandl, the head of research at Grayscale, posted on the X platform comparing Ethereum to a "small country" and discussed the ETH issuance mechanism. He believes that Ethereum has only one core "government function": to protect property rights and value exchange within the system. Unlike traditional countries that provide public services through taxation, Ethereum primarily funds network security through "seigniorage," which is the issuance of new ETH.In this framework, the stakers responsible for maintaining network security are akin to a group providing public services, as they receive rewards through newly issued ETH. Therefore, Ethereum's staking mechanism and ETH issuance policy essentially constitute the network's fiscal and monetary policy. Zach Pandl pointed out that the Ethereum community needs to decide how much "new currency" should be used to cover network security costs. More security typically means stronger protection of property rights, but at the cost of a higher ETH issuance rate and potential other risks.For example, if network security increasingly relies on a few large staking service providers, there remains room for discussion about whether these providers can maintain the asset rights of all users completely neutrally. Pandl believes that, just as in traditional economies, no one knows the "optimal level" of government spending and currency issuance; the same applies to Ethereum. However, Ethereum has several key security thresholds, including: 1/3: an attacker reaching this ratio may affect finality; 1/2: affects blockchain fork choice; 2/3: can control the finality process. Some community members believe that the design of Ethereum's monetary and fiscal policy should consider the security trade-offs brought by these key ratios, while the current mechanism has not adequately incorporated these factors. However, the above analogy is not entirely accurate, as it does not yet involve other important factors such as the ETH burn mechanism, MEV, governance, etc.

Harmony Protocol confirms the first round of issuance of 4 billion ONE and prepares to roll back

Harmony Protocol released an event update stating that an unauthorized ONE minting incident occurred. Investigations show that the attacker exploited a cross-shard receipt replay vulnerability, allowing processed cross-shard receipts to be executed multiple times, and minted ONE in empty blocks.The team is currently verifying two sets of impact data: early analysis indicates that the first round of minting involved 4 billion ONE, while the latest on-chain reconstruction shows that approximately 3.01 trillion ONE were issued to four attacker wallets through six forged cross-shard transactions. Harmony Protocol confirmed the first round of minting of 4 billion ONE, generated through two empty block accounting transactions that produced 1 billion and 3 billion ONE respectively, of which 2.8 billion ONE were subsequently transferred to other attacker addresses.The team has fixed the cross-shard receipt verification and pre-staking committee quorum verification vulnerabilities and deployed Mainnet v2026.1.1. Bridge services have been suspended, and Harmony Protocol is coordinating with validators, trading platforms, and LayerZero to freeze related funds, preparing to roll back the network to block 92,730,034 before the attack occurred. Currently, Shard 0 has been paused at block 92,753,555, and the official RPC may return a 502 error as a result.

The issuance of TRC20-USDT has surpassed 91.2 billion, making it the largest USDT issuance network in the world

The latest data shows that the issuance of TRC20-USDT has surpassed 91.2 billion, once again exceeding Ethereum, becoming the largest USDT issuance network in the world. Since the beginning of this year, the TRON network has cumulatively issued an additional 10 billion USDT. Currently, the number of accounts holding TRC20-USDT has reached 75.47 million, with a total of over 3.5 billion transactions. At the same time, the total number of transactions on the TRON network has recently also surpassed 15 billion.In addition, Moonpay Trade has recently integrated the TRON network, allowing users to complete network fee payments without holding TRX when trading on the TRON network.TRC20-USDT is a stablecoin pegged to the US dollar issued by Tether based on the TRON network. Its characteristics of fast transfer speed and low fees have attracted a large number of users, and it has already received support from several exchanges including Binance, HTX, OKX, Bitfinex, MEXC, KuCoin, Gate.io, and Poloniex. The TRC20 version of USDT will significantly enhance the existing decentralized application ecosystem of TRON, bringing higher overall value storage and stronger liquidity for decentralized exchanges, and providing enterprise-level partners and institutional investors with a more convenient blockchain entry.
