Michael Saylor: Bitcoin attempts to monetize digital scarcity, reshaping wealth storage and value transfer

Founder of Strategy, Michael Saylor, stated that Bitcoin integrates computers, digital networks, and cryptography to create the first digitally designed currency network in human history. It completely dematerializes monetary assets, with supply controlled by public protocols rather than decisions, transforming economic value into information that can be securely transmitted across global communication networks.Compared to gold, Bitcoin is harder to issue, easier to integrate with software, faster in transmission, and every participant has the incentive to maintain network security. The proof-of-work mechanism anchors it in the physical world, making the cost of altering history high by consuming real energy for ledger security, attracting miners, energy providers, and investors to collaboratively build a defense system. Bitcoin is digital gold, but understanding it as digital currency is more fitting. The Bitcoin network is not static software; it is an adaptive system composed of miners, nodes, developers, capital, and users. Bitcoin deliberately maintains simplicity in functionality, focusing solely on maintaining a secure and reliable ledger of scarce digital assets, leaving complexity to upper-layer applications. This layered design of underlying integrity and upper-layer functionality allows it to serve as a foundation for transmitting monetary energy across time and space while supporting continuous innovation in payments, credit, and financial services. The more profound impact is that Bitcoin creates a new form of digital sovereignty: private keys empower individuals to control economic energy without permission, with ownership verified by mathematics rather than institutions. Companies, banks, trusts, and applications can build a complete economic system around it, and social networks can introduce real costs and responsibilities into the digital space. Gold monetized physical scarcity, while Bitcoin monetizes digital scarcity. It is not merely a payment tool but an engineering solution to humanity's challenges in energy preservation and guidance—currency is energy, and Bitcoin is the currency energy of the digital age.

Gray Research Director: Ethereum is like a "small country," and the issuance of ETH determines the balance between network security and currency

Zach Pandl, the head of research at Grayscale, posted on the X platform comparing Ethereum to a "small country" and discussed the ETH issuance mechanism. He believes that Ethereum has only one core "government function": to protect property rights and value exchange within the system. Unlike traditional countries that provide public services through taxation, Ethereum primarily funds network security through "seigniorage," which is the issuance of new ETH.In this framework, the stakers responsible for maintaining network security are akin to a group providing public services, as they receive rewards through newly issued ETH. Therefore, Ethereum's staking mechanism and ETH issuance policy essentially constitute the network's fiscal and monetary policy. Zach Pandl pointed out that the Ethereum community needs to decide how much "new currency" should be used to cover network security costs. More security typically means stronger protection of property rights, but at the cost of a higher ETH issuance rate and potential other risks. For example, if network security increasingly relies on a few large staking service providers, there remains room for discussion about whether these providers can maintain the asset rights of all users completely neutrally. Pandl believes that, just as in traditional economies, no one knows the "optimal level" of government spending and currency issuance; the same applies to Ethereum. However, Ethereum has several key security thresholds, including: 1/3: an attacker reaching this ratio may affect finality; 1/2: affects blockchain fork choice; 2/3: can control the finality process. Some community members believe that the design of Ethereum's monetary and fiscal policy should consider the security trade-offs brought by these key ratios, while the current mechanism has not adequately incorporated these factors. However, the above analogy is not entirely accurate, as it does not yet involve other important factors such as the ETH burn mechanism, MEV, governance, etc.

first_img MSCI's new proposal may exclude Strategy and Metaplanet from the global investable index

According to CoinDesk, the index provider MSCI has launched a new round of consultations, proposing to exclude so-called "non-operating companies" from its Global Investable Market Indexes. This classification will no longer use the proportion of crypto assets as the sole threshold but will adopt a two-step screening process: first, it will check whether operating assets exceed 50% of total assets; those that do not pass will then be assessed based on five financial ratios: operating asset intensity, expense intensity, cash flow, fair value intensity, and capital dependence. If at least four of these do not meet the standards, they will not qualify for inclusion. If the current data is applied to the MSCI ACWI IMI Index, Bitcoin-holding companies Strategy (MSTR), Metaplanet (3350), and uranium holder Yellow Cake will be excluded. Strategy has cumulatively held approximately 840,400 BTC since 2020, while Metaplanet holds about 43,000 BTC. MSCI's description of "non-operating companies" refers to businesses that create value by accumulating and holding non-operating assets, have limited operating cash flow, and rely on external financing for expansion. The consultation for collecting opinions will end on September 30, with results expected to be announced around October 16; even if approved, the related adjustments will not take effect until the index review in November 2026 at the earliest. Previously, a consultation in October 2025 regarding "digital asset treasury" companies, which set a standard of 50% for crypto asset proportion, had caused market fluctuations and industry opposition, ultimately being postponed.
