Farcaster founder responds to rumors, the protocol is not shut down, Merkle will fully refund $180 million in funds
In response to recent market rumors, Farcaster founder Dan Romero clarified in a post that Farcaster has not shut down, the protocol is currently running normally, and it will continue to operate in the future. Data shows that Farcaster had approximately 250,000 monthly active users (MAU) in December 2025, with over 100,000 wallet addresses on-chain that have funds.Romero stated that the acquirer of Farcaster, Neynar, is a venture-backed startup that plans to push Farcaster in a more developer-oriented direction in the future, rather than terminating the project. Additionally, Romero discussed his other project, Merkle, stating that the team has decided to fully return $180 million in funding to investors. He mentioned that over the past five years, the team has consistently worked to be responsible stewards of investor funds. Romero also clarified that the funds he used to purchase property came from the proceeds of the Coinbase IPO, addressing external speculation.
